Salon has an award called "The Buffy" which they describe as the 'annual award for the most underappreciated television show in all the land.'...last year's Buffy went to 'The Wire' which is a damn good show..if you want to know which show gets this year's Buffy, go to Salon or the show itself..

Saw Dark Water..pretty bad film, but the first half hour is worth a watch just to see what raising a child beautifully is really all about...and Jennifer Connelly does not disappoint, even if the film does.

The poet Sharon Olds (who teaches at NYU) has written a letter to Laura Bush refusing an invitation to attend the national Book Fest. in DC.
Kwtis, read it to see what university programs are offering their communities, and also to read Olds' reasons for declining the invite..it is short and powerful.

On the same day as the book event above...poeple will be converging on Washington (and other cities) to protest the war..
More on that here.

The original Japanese version of Dark Water is way better. Just as slow-paced but much more captivating. God it's tedious typing in the word verification every five minutes. Anyways, if you want you can borrow my dvd copy anytime. Don't worry, I know that you want to keep you identity private and all so I could just drop it off somewhere and you'll pick it up or something. *shrugs* Whatever, your terms. Laters!

hahahaha thanks for being so understanding D'n'G...the whole mysterious drop off thing would be funny..you know I have been watching some anime recently, and of course I thought of you, the Japanese fanatic..just saw Ghost in the Shell and and Princess Mononoke..and just got Akira..starting with the obvious things..I would love any other recommendations...you are the expert after all.
Word verification sucks..especially since it keeps rejecting what I type..sorry..damn spammers wreck everything.

lol Don't laugh at me I was being serious :P You called me an expert on anime, now I'm gonna be all puffed up for weeks :D GITS and Akira are classics. Princess Mononoke is pretty awesome too. They play Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away on the Movie Channel on Showtime alot. You should see Spirited Away as well.

I totally recommend Grave of Fireflies, The Heroic Legend of Arislan (has nothing to do with the C.S. Lewis's work), Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Jin-Roh, Kite, Ninja Scroll, and Metropolis (another classic). God there's so much anime out there and they're all awesome. You gotta be specific. What do you like? Comedy, Action, Horror, Drama, etc... Those are all just movies, if you wanna get into series, lemme know and I'll be more than happy to help :) Laters!

Just the titles sound good...i will look into those..i would say i am more into the ones that are either bittersweet(emphasis on bitter)... or futuristic...
The comedy in some of the things i've seen is a bit difficult for me still..as i find it super disturbing and not really funny..but i am willing to learn..
I like the atmostphere in GITS and the whole what is human/real/good/right/self and how can we tell? theme..I liked the dramatic scenes in Mononoke..poetic..
So horror, sci-fi,drama more than comedy..and sure if you think there are series I should look at let me know.. :)
Thanks Expert (there, are you getting puffier?)

Much, much puffier :D Seriously, you'll love Grave of Fireflies I really don't wanna say anymore 'cuz I'm afraid I'll spoil it. Plus, I think it's more fun when you watch a movie or read a book or what have you, without having any idea of what it's about.

The anime movies I recommended so far are pretty good but if you wanna get into the series, there's Noir, Gundam Wing, Rurouni Kenshin, Vision of Escaflowne, and to slowly ease you into the japanese's wierd sense of comedy Fushigi Yuugi which has a little bit of everything in it. If you'd like me to go into details, or give you just a little summary about each one without ruining anything, I'd be more than happy to.
